… master of his craft
by True Thomas – February 20, 2010

Baba has the rhythm and grace of a storyteller born. Where some tellers may strive to reach that gentle ease, he takes it and “flows”. He tells with the confidence and knowledge of someone who is a master of his craft. And people can’t help but be mesmerized.- True Thomas the Storyteller

by Connie Nungresser – February 18, 2010

Baba came to my workplace for Black History Month and I thoroughly enjoyed it. He is an awesome storyteller and the music he plays on his instrument, I think it’s called a Kora, is beautiful. Thanks for sharing your talent and wisdom with us.

… not easily described, it can only be experienced.
by Magda Polkowska – February 13, 2010

This voice comes from a very old wise place…

i had a great honor to hear Baba twice, first time in Poland during a storytelling festival in Warsaw, and second time in Tennessee back in the fall, also during a storytelling festival. i also had a great honor to visit West Africa, and i say this because very often i tried to describe the feeling that permeated the land and the people there. this feeling is so distinct, so alive, so genuine; captured in every gesture, every little movement, every sound, in every color, and fragrance. and it is not easily explained….. this feeling of West Africa…

and there, in a Polish park, outskirts of Warsaw, as Baba entered the stage, majestic & humble, with the first gesture, with the first sound of the sweet Kora, with the first word, and the wind that came to listen all of a sudden… a familiar feeling – in every cell of my body, i felt: … West Africa. and i knew that a true griot was sharing a story with us, and that we were truly blessed.

Baba’s ability to weave together: the audience, the music, and the story into one communal event, is a unique gift; and just like West Africa – not easily described, it can only be experienced. so distinct, so alive, & so genuine. thank you, Baba, truly, thank you!

when the wind comes suddenly to listen to a storyteller
one can be sure:
this voice comes from a very old wise place….

Baba came to my middle school about a week ago… We all loved the stories and loved how they were played and how we interacted with them. He makes lessons fun and enjoyable. He gave us the shells, which many people wear them as a necklace. I hope that we get to see him again and enjoy many more storys.

Everybody enjoys his presence and will always remember him.

Baba has been at my school for as long as i’ve been there, 6th to 8th grade. He is an inspiration to kids everywhere. He teaches us about the African culture, and stories about Africa. He sings songs, and is a joy to be around. He is hilarious, and has an over all good time doing what he does. He enjoys to teach about the African culture, and is very knowledgeable. He speaks different languages, and is an all around nice, kind, intelligent person. Everybody enjoys his presense and will always remember him.

I love all of his stories he tells us.

by Alissa Yum – November 23, 2009

Baba was super funny when he came to my middle school 2 years ago. He was so entertaining, I still remember what most of his stories were about. It was one of the only times I had fun in Social Studies. It was also one of the only times I learned something about different cultures. It was a really great experience and i hope to see Baba perform again!

… one of the most intelligent, funny, amusing adults I have ever been happy to meet.
by Megan Harris – November 23, 2009

Baba came to my middle school for all three years i was there. First in the 6th grade, i thought he was honestly going to be absolutley boring, just like every other assembly. But he proved me wrong. Baba told stories, made us laugh, even played a song or two. He was the talk of the week. In the 7th grade, when everyone heard he had returned, it went going around like a bad case of the flu. Except, everyone enjoyed him, and was never sick of him. I now saw him for the last time in the 8th grade, which is a sad thing, but also happy. He acted like our best friend, as if he knew us for more than 3 years. As if we’d been friends for a life time. He is one of the most intelligent, funny, amusing adult i have ever been happy to meet. Every school should hear his words of wisdom, and culture.

… fun to listen to!
by Megan Masnaghetti – November 23, 2009

Baba was really fun to listen to! He was funny and nice. and I didn’t almost fall asleep in social studies the day he came. That was a first.

… a rare combination of many talents…
by Jan Bouldin Blunt  – November 9, 2009

Baba has a rare combination of many talents: storytelling, singing, acting, even a little dancing, excellent musicianship on several instruments, multi-lingualism, and can find a teachable moment at the drop of a hat. Listening to him on the kora is mesmerizing. Add to that a delightful story which teaches us all something, whether we want to learn or not, and you’ve got a fascinating and polished presentation. I am repeatedly impressed by all he does and can do!

Baba is a phenomenal storyteller…
by Elizabeth Olivares  – October 18, 2009

I met Baba through my work. At first when one hears of a storyteller we might under estimate what he or she does. We might think that it is someone that just tells stories, but that is a misconception. Baba is a phenomenal storyteller who comes and shares a story with you, but brings wisdom and lessons to learn. Baba makes a personal connection with everyone, whether it be young or old, through his words. He has a way of captivating his audience and bringing them on the journey of his story. Baba has a way with his stories where he is able to help us make the connection between stories and life interwine, and to be able to apply it to our own lives. Baba is not just a performer but so much more. He is a gift to those who are his friends, but to those who have the opportunity to listen to him. You will be inspired by him and his stories. What Baba has to share is something that a few people take the time to give to others. Everything you learn from him are things that you can apply to your life whether it be something big or small. I would recommend Baba to everyone.

I am blessed to know Baba.

…tú eres quien tiene la gracia de las palabras…
by Núria Font  – September 27, 2009

…blesses your spirit by his words…
by Angela Daniels  – September 21, 2009

I was introduced to Baba during Black History Month at the university I attended.
I must say Baba is gifted, inspiring, and he blesses your spirit by his words. He’s not just another performer of a cultural story; he’s the living story of the performance. He makes you feel so connected, he ignites something in you to make you want to learn more about Swahili, Kwanzaa, cultural traditions and yourself. You will not leave there the same way you came. I guarantee something will fuse in your mind and spirit giving you a sense of purpose and the importance of cultural understanding.

I was blessed by the knowledge Baba had and I recommend that others would take part in the experience.

… he always has more.
by Evan Greer  – September 17, 2009

I’ve been seeing baba perform and do story telling for over 6 years now and I still end up learning something every time I see him. Even stories that I have heard more than once gain a new meaning as i get older and hear them again. And when I think I’ve heard them all, he always has more.

Baba is more than a storyteller…
by Pedro O’Campo  – September 15, 2009

So, at one point i was petrified from speaking in front of crowds and therefore, i just didn’t. Thankfully I was introduced to BABA!! Not only did I learn to speak in front of crowds because of Baba’s incredible classes, but this experience is going to help me with future experiences such as job interviews or college board meetings!! Baba is more than a storyteller he is a person that is understanding and well he is just basically awesome!!!

Baba is one of these angels…
by Sundari Moneek  – September 15, 2009

When The Creator sends angels to walk amongst humans, they show extraordinary talents. These talents can mesmerize, hypnotize, and suprise. Baba is one of these angels who blesses us with his enormous talent.

If you have not had the opportunity to be in his presence when he is sharing his wisdom and rhythm, I say to you,” You Are Missing Out”. Let him bless your head, heart, and imagination, he will take you to a place where wonderment lives.

… can make a whole room smile…
by Darrin Jackson  – September 14, 2009

Baba is Unique, Highly Professional, and just guaranteed to make you smile. He is a marked step above the rest. I’ve followed Baba for many years, and I’m still amazed at how he can make the whole room smile every time. He is the 8th Wonder of the story telling world. A few words to describe the experience would be Vivid,Enchanting, Enlightened, Surreal. But dont take my word for it…I Highly recommend this experience for everybody. His fantastic musicianship is one of a kind. He plays the Kora, a harp like instrument with the beautiful and mystic sound of ancient Africa. The sound is peaceful, and tranquil. A true Griot, he even sings songs to a multitude of nations. He is multi-lingual, Spanish, English, French, Wool-of, Manding and other traditional tongues. But even if he couldn’t sing or play, any man that can keep a room full of kids quiet and attentive for 30 minutes has my praise. If you see him perform, then you will understand why I say “WE LOVE BABA!”

Baba is an amazing storyteller…
by Gail Abrams  – September 13, 2009

Baba is an amazing storyteller and a charismatic performer! I have had him twice as a guest artist for a course I teach at Scripps College, and students have loved him. He is returning for a third visit soon and I know my current students will love him as well. He presents a wonderful blend of African culture, both traditional and contemporary, deep wisdom, and humor. I recommend him highly for private parties and events, as well as for school programs. He is truly a gem!

El espectáculo de Djeliba Baba the Storyteller es innovador…
by Yerko Fuenzalida  – September 13, 2009

Baba the Storyteller is an incredible performer…
by T. Hasan Johnson – September 13, 2009

Baba the Storyteller is an incredible performer, scholar of ancient Africa, and spiritual teacher! His performance at my friend’s wedding a couple of weeks ago was phenomenal! He single-handedly change the whole flow of the ceremony by reminding the audience about love, the role of African culture in African American wedding unions, and the real purpose of griots! I hope any of you considering to have this brother speak at your wedding, childbirth celebration, or any other type of ritual please do it—you’ll be amazed! And, he’s extremely diverse; he could deal with any subject or occasion and truly invoke the spirit of the elders! I fully recommend this brother to all and I WILL be calling him for the next occasion we have!
